Sue Dunton, Proud to Support Royal LePage Shelter Foundation

Growing up, Sue Dunton’s parents taught her to be mindful of the needs of others.

It’s something she’s carried with her whole life, so it should come as no surprise the Royal LePage Performance Realty Broker was named a top donor to the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation in 2021.

Dunton was awarded with a Top 10% Donor designation by Royal LePage in March. She was able to raise most of that money in 2021 through commission donations.

“Having a community-minded family taught me the value in caring for others less fortunate,” Dunton says, adding she chooses to support the foundation because she understands the value of having a safe place to call home.

“I have worked, volunteered and donated to many charities over the years, however, the pandemic has put an extraordinary strain on shelters offering basic needs like food, housing and mental health support.”

Royal LePage is the only Canadian real estate company with its own charitable foundation. Every dollar raised goes directly to helping more than 50,000 women and children who are served each year by shelters and support programs the foundation supports. Last year, the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation raised $3.3 million to support women’s shelters and domestic violence prevention programs from coast to coast, bringing their cumulative total to $38 million raised since 1998.

“Every penny raised in the Royal Lepage Shelter Foundation goes directly to the registered charity recipients within our Ottawa community. There is no administration fee on our donations and the money is directed to where it is needed most,” Dunton says, adding Royal Lepage Canada covers the administration costs of the Shelter Foundation, making the donations go even further.

Shelters use the funding to provide critical services such as:

  • emergency housing for women and children;
  • trauma counseling;
  • job training and placement;
  • emergency transportation to the shelter;
  • play therapy for children;
  • homework help for youth;
  • renovations to existing shelters; and
  • building new shelters.

In some cases, the funds are used to help women and children after they leave the shelter and move into their own accommodations.

The Royal LePage Shelter Foundation is a founding partner of the Fourth R, a curriculum-based education program that has been delivered in 5,500 schools across North America. With the help of the Shelter Foundation’s national partner, the Canadian Women’s Foundation, they support grassroots programs to help women rebuild their lives after violence and help children from becoming victims or abusers themselves. As a founding national partner of the online resource sheltersafe.ca, the foundation makes it possible for women seeking safety to identify a shelter in a specific geographic area along with its 24-hour emergency phone line.

“Royal LePage Performance Realty has a culture of care, making it easy to give back to those less fortunate,” Dunton adds.
